The Trickster – Song of a Mimic Octopus

By Elizabeth, age 15

I’m patient.
I wait for the right time.
A damselfish.
I wave two arms from side to side.
Because now
I’m suddenly a sea snake.
A fright.
Dare to bother me again.

I’m not there
But I know where you’ve swum.
Colour-blind
To all the shades I can become.
I’m a crab
When I see one of them nearby.
I know hunger.
When it comes close I take a bite.

I forage in disguise,
Using syphon jets I glide.
My tentacles reach into cracks,
Searching in between each grab.
Because I’m a mimicking miracle,
Shapeshifting in ways impossible.
Controlled by colour-changing cells,
You will never know me well.
