The Shape of Change

By Louise, age 11

From mountain peaks where glaciers lie,
To clouds that drift across the sky,
Water moves – it doesn’t wait
It’s always changing its own state.

When sunlight warms the frozen ground,
The solid ice won’t stay spellbound.
It melts into a liquid stream,
And flows like thoughts inside a dream.

As heat climbs up, the liquid’s gone.
It turns to gas and travels on.
At boiling point, the shift is fast,
The water lifts, becomes a gas.

You can’t see it – it hides in air
But cooling winds will find it there.
Condensed, it drops as gentle rain,
And joins the river once again.

If cold returns, the cycle’s tight.
It freezes back to crystal white.
And sometimes ice just fades away.
It changes, no time to stay.

And frost appears when vapour chills,
A quiet touch on trees and hills.
So water dances, never still.
It flows with nature’s silent will.
From state to state, it plays its part–
The changing soul of Earth’s own heart.
