Ocean reactions: why we should care about ocean chemistry

The phrase ocean chemistry might make you think of pollution. Yet the field of ocean chemistry is a massive expanse, from climate change and animal behaviour to pharmaceuticals and electric cars. Incredible Ocean’s marine biologist Russell Arnott and Kolisa Sinyanya from the University of Cape Town discuss cutting-edge marine research and explore the potential impacts of their findings.

Having majored in Molecular Systematics, Kolisa Sinyanya now explores the marine domain where she uses nitrogen isotopes to understand the microbial and phytoplankton communities and nutrient interactions in the Indian and Southern Ocean. Based at the University of Cape Town, she also runs the Women In Science Hub: a blog where she interviews game changer women from all walks of life in the ever-changing world of STEM.

 

 

Russell Arnott is a researcher in Phytoplankton Dynamics at the University of Bath. His research focuses on the link between physical processes and how these impact biological systems. Russell is an author, presenter and marine science communicator having appeared on Sky News, Deep Ocean Live, the Channel 5 Saturday Show, and EuroNews as well as presenting at science and music festivals across Europe.
